    Since the beginning of civilization humans have believed that gemstones have certain powers.  From healing, to bringing good fortune their lore is found in myths, legends and historical accounts from almost every society and culture.     Those born under the star sign of Taurus are a complex bunch.  Often cursed by a tendancy for laziness, they are also extremely determined and hard working once they put their mind to something.

    Taurean's born today share their birthday with Coretta Scott King, the widow of Martin Luther King. In the years after her husbands assassination she used her Taurean determination to carry on her husband's fight for racial equality as well as become a prominent figure in the Women's Movement.

    Another determined Taurean born today was Sheila Scott.  Born in 1927, Scott was an ground breaking English female pilot, who broke over 100 aviation records and was the first person to fly over the North Pole in a small aircraft.

    The Taurus star sign traditionally covers people born between 21 April and 21 May, however the constellation is no longer aligned with these dates, due to equinoxes. Since 2002, the Sun has actually appeared in the Taurus constellation between May 14 to June 19.     Creative Taurean Robert Penn Warren was born today in 1905.  The author received a 1947 Pulitzer Prize for his novel All the Kings Men and another two Pulitzer Prizes in 1957 and 1979 for his poetry, making him the only person to have won the prize for both fiction and poetry.

    Other creative and determined Taureans born today are Academy Award winning all sining, all dancing actresses Shirley MacLaine and Barbra Streisand. Streisand is also listed 15th on the list of Best-Selling Artists of all time. The two performers are close friends and celebrate their birthday together each year.

    If you are celebrating your birthday today, you share the day with who two highly creative Taurean's, the first is who many describe as the greatest writer in the English language, William Shakespeare.  Although Shakespeare's actual birthday is not known it is widely celebrated on this day, which is also St George's Day.  Athough Shakespeare lived from 1564 till 1616,  his works are still highly read and topical today.

    Secondly, the painter J M W Turner was born today in 1775. Turner's style of painting is thought to have laid the foundation for Impressionism and he is commonly known as "the painter of light".

    Also born today in 1899 is Minoru Shirota, the creator of the pro-biotic drink, Yakult. Shirota was inspired by the writings of microbiologist Ilya Ilyich Mechnikov and was determined to find a stronger strain of lactic acid bacteria which could help to kill the harmful bacteria living in human intestines.
