When a Cancer uses their drive and determination, they can often achieve great things, which Frits Zernike, born in 1888, certainly did within the world of science.  He earned a Nobel Prize in Physics in 1953, for his invention of the phase contrast microscope. Another Cancer who achieved great things in her career was actress and dancer Ginger Rogers. Born in 1911, Rogers is best remember for her onscreen partnership with Fred Astaire who she starred alongside in ten musical hit movies. She won an Academy Award for Best Actress in 1940, and during her career made a whopping seventy three films!

Determination is a personality trait which people born within the Cancer star sign are know for, and Emmeline Pankhurst, born today in 1858, certainly displayed this quality during her tireless fight for women's right to vote.  Her determination paid off, and women over the age of thirty were finally granted their voting rights in the United Kingdom in 1918.

Born today in 1868 Hale was an respected American astronomer. Hale also showed the Cancer characteristic of determination in his work to start a number of astronomical observatories including Mount Wilson Observatory and the Hale Solar Laboratory. Hale's determination was not just reserved for his own career, however, as he hired and encouraged other astronomers such as Harlow Shapley and Edwin Hubble with their work on some of the most significant discoveries of the time.
