If you are celebrating your birthday today, then you share the day with Harvey Ball. Although Ball's name may not be recognised by many, this creative Cancer born in 1921, is the earliest designer of the cult cartoon Smiley in 1963. This little yellow face has since worked it's way into popular culture, and was a symbol for the acid movement in the 1990's.  Cancers are rarely concerned about having wealth, and Ball was no exception, originally earning only $45 for the smiley cartoon and choosing not to register the copyright.   He went on to found the World Smile Foundation which raised money for charity and encouraged people to "Do an act of kindness - help one person smile".

People born under the star sign of Cancer can have a ferocious temper, along with a compulsive and singular focus, which may have lead to Anna Hahn, born in 1906, to become a serial killer. German born Hahn was an American serial killer, who was sent to stay with family in America after she became pregnant as a teenager. Hahn had a gambling addiction and she robbed then killed her elderly victims to fund this habit.  In total she killed five people before she was caught, convicted and sentenced to death.

Most Cancers have a softer side though, and many enjoy performing. Richard Starkey or Ringo Starr as he is better known, used thischaracteristic as The Beatles drummer and lead singer on various Beatles songs including "Yellow Submarine".

If you are celebrating your birthday today you share it with two Cancer's with presidential connections, firstly George W. Bush born in 1946. Bush showed a typical Cancer single mindedness in his fight against terrorism across the world after the attack on the World Trade Centre in 2001.  His actions may have led to criticism from many both nationally and internationally, however it was typical behaviour for a loyal and protective Cancer.

Henry VIIIHenry VIIICancers can have a ferocious temper which you would certainly say about Henry VIII, born today in 1491, if you were one of his six wives! Two of his wives he divorced and two of them he had executed. Henry VIII is probably one of the best known Kings of England although he is more famous for his strops with his lovers and the Catholic Church than his rule.  His dispute with the Vatican over his desire to divorce his first wife Catherine ofAragon led to the separation of the Church of England from Rome and was the beginning of a period of war and bloodshed in the UK, the effects of which can still be felt in the animosity between Catholics and Protestants in many parts of Great Britain.

Mr. TMr. TEnglish poet Alexander Pope, born today in 1688, displayed his creative Taurean personality in his work, and is regarded as one of the greatest poets of the eighteenth century.

"I pity the fool who doesn't remember my birthday!"  (Sorry!  Couldn't resist.)

Elizabeth Fry, born today in 1780, was an English prison and social reformer, and a prime example of what Taureans can achieve with their natural determination, focus and commitment to a plan. Fry was the driving force behind new legislation to make the treatment of prisoners in England more humane. She also established a "nightly shelter" for the homeless in London after seeing a young child living on the streets in winter. In Brighton she also started a visiting society, where volunteers visited the poor at home, to provide them with help and comfort. This society was later set up in other towns across Britain. Chow Yun FatChow Yun FatTaureans born today share their birthday with a rather unlucky Russian Tsar, Nicholas II, the last Tsar of Russia who abdicated after the Revolution of 1917 and was killed along with his family by the Bolsheviks on the night of 17 July 1918.   Perhaps it was highTaurean focus that led him to strive for power for Russia at any cost, earning him the reputation 'Bloody Nicholas.'

Once Taureans have a goal in sight they rarely let up, and this was certainly true for the Tennis star Fred Perry, born today in 1909.  He was a three time Wimbledon Champion, and was the World No 1 for five years, four of which were consecutive. He was also the last Englishman to win all of the Wimbledon, US Open, French Open and Australian Open Men's Singles titles. Read more
